Born in Reading, Pennsylvania in 1954 and raised in Berks County, he developed an early interest in the region's decorative traditions and later earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from Kutztown University in 1977, graduating cum laude. His work combines traditional Pennsylvania Dutch hex signs with Germanic symbolism, plant geometry, and runic motifs. He is the founder of The Hex Factory in Philadelphia and has spent decades creating hand-painted hex signs, writing books, exhibiting artwork, and researching Pennsylvania Dutch culture.
